Californication, in my opinion, was Red Hot Chili Peppers best effort in the studio. The songwriting is solid and soulful. The musicianship is tight and spontaneous. Anthony Kiedis has never sounded better. John Frusciante was back in the fold and his playing was sublime perfection. Flea’s bass playing is melodic, spastic and as driving as ever. Chad Smith keeps the beat and tempo running throughout. Californication was the result of a band communicating with each other on a higher musical plane.
I was joined on this video by a 15-year-old drummer by the name of Matt Deakin, the guy has got some serious skills for a teenager.
This video is part of my Top 50 Albums on a ukulele project, if you enjoyed it why not check out some other awesome bands from the 90s that I arranged for ukulele. Like Nirvana – Nevermind or Rage Against The Machine. Or Some of the Chilis early inspirations like The Clash, Bob Marley or Black Sabbath.
