Eat My Uke

Madness – House Of Fun

Some of their songs were regular staples on the CD player in my house as a child. I went on to become a huge fan of Ska and Punk when I was a teen so its easier to see the early influence madness had on me. The main melodies for a lot of their songs come from the brass section. That doesn’t mean to say we cant play them on a uke. Let’s learn to play House Of Fun on the ukulele.

What Are We Learning To Play?

Below is a video of what you will be able to play by the end of this post.

Ukulele Tabs

This song is super nippy and requires some serious thumb and finger dexterity on the plucking hand. Don’t be discouraged though as with some practise it’s more than manageable. This article I wrote this useful guide on speeding up your playing.

We are opening with a chord shape. Barre the 5th fret and use your middle finger on the 6th fret of the C string. Pluck the C with your thumb and use your next two fingers for the E and A. Then we have the super-fast bit. We are using our thumb and first finger and quickly alternating between the two notes. It is really fast but starts slow and work your way up to it. It’s a great exercise for speed playing.

After that section, we have a chord slide. To make it easier on yourself, you can keep your finger barring the bottom 3 strings for this bit too.
