I, and you are more than likely the same, first heard this song on TikTok. It quickly became the soundtrack to anything nostalgic on the app. The song is great and it has a lovely intro lick. Let’s learn to play Coming Of Age on the ukulele.
What Are We Learning To Play?
Below is a video of what you will be able to play by the end of this post.
Use your first finger to barre the 2nd fret on both the C and E string. Then your middle finger will be fretting the 3rd fret on the E. For the second section, your first finger will already be placed correctly on the C. Use your ring finger to hit that 4th fret.
In the video above, I use my fingernail. However, you could also fingerpick it by using your thumb on the top and first finger on the bottom.
This will sound a lot higher then it does on the original song. However, its the only way of keeping it in the same key and using a ukulele with a high G string.
We can make this easier by preparing our fretting fingers beforehand. Place your first finger on the 9th fret of the A string and your middle finger on the 10th fret of the E. That will leave your ring finger to hit that 10th fret on the A. We have a very similar shape for the second section except your middle finger will be on the C string instead.
