Hakuna Matata – The Lion King

Hakuna Matata - The Lion King

All the music from The Lion King lends itself really well to the ukulele. Let’s learn to play Hakuna Matata on the uke.

I love The Lion King, without a doubt one of my favorite animated films of all time. I actually went to see the original when it was released in the cinema too. When I was in school growing up, me and all my friends would always do the “Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba Sithi uhm ingonyama” mega intro to The Circle Of Life, whenever anything epic would happen. Great Memories!

So with the remake just about to be released it seemed like a great time to arrange one of the best songs from the film, Hakuna Matata.

What Are We Learning To Play

Below is a video of what you will be able to play at the end of this post.

Playing Tips

There’s lots of sliding involved in this arrangement. Often the timing of the slide is what glues the notes together. I would suggest playing along to the video at the top of the page. I’m playing to a click track, that means you won’t sway out of time.

For the second part, I am using a technique called palm muting. It’s not 100% necessary, I just feel it adds a little extra dynamic to the piece. Palm muting is placing your strumming hand just after the bridge. Gently hover it over the strings, this will cause them to sound dampened.
